Happy October 3rd to those who celebrate! The movie "Mean Girls" first graced our big screen 20 years ago, but girls worldwide celebrate by rewatching the 2004 classic. During my yearly rewatch, some of my favorite characters have reminded me of some of my favorite football players. So, what better way to celebrate "Mean Girls" Day than with a sporty twist? Who do you think embodies the spirit of some of our favorite "Mean Girl" characters? Here's our list!
Cady Heron & Brock Purdy
One thing that both Cady Heron and Brock Purdy have in common is that they are both overlooked and seen as underdogs. Mr. Irreverent was drafted last in the 2022 NFL draft. Throughout his rookie season, he flew under the radar until week 14, when Purdy had his first start as an NFL quarterback for the 49ers. He took the team all the way to the NFC championships that season. This was followed by an impressive 2023 season, where he had his first entire season as a starter and ended up in the Super Bowl. Cady was once the queen of the plastics, so it's just a matter of time before Purdy finally gets his ring.
Regina George & Patrick Mahomes
Whether you like it or not, Patrick Mahomes has been on top of the NFL for the last few years. You can't talk about the NFL these days without talking about Mahomes. He's just that guy because, just like Regina George, he holds a star power that people love to hate. And why wouldn't you? Some say he's overconfident, but we're talking about a 3x Super Bowl champion. He might not be a mean girl, per se, but if this were Northshore High, the Kansas City Chiefs would be the plastics, and Mahomes would be our Regina.
Karen Smith & Travis Kelce
It's Travis Kelce- DUH! He is literally everywhere, and no one is getting tired of him. Just like Karen, he is incredibly charismatic. There's something about him you just love. He has this playful side that fans can see on his social media and his podcast, New Heights, which he co-hosts with his brother. But now we're left wondering. Can Travis Kelce fit his fist in his mouth, just like Karen?
Gretchen Wieners & Justin Herbert
Justin Herbert's hair is so big because it's full of secrets. Herbert might not have much in common with Gretchen, but to understand this comparison, you have to understand her as a character. All Gretchen wants is to be the best and to be on top. Herbert might not be as high-strung as Gretchen, but he is super competitive; he wants to win. Will Herbert make it to the top this year? Gretchen couldn't make fetch happen, but maybe Herbert can!
Janis Ian & Josh Allen
If someone were to use the comeback "Your mom's chest hair" other than Janis Ian, it would certainly be Josh Allen. He might not be switching out Mahomes' face cream for foot creaming with Purdy, but without a doubt, something is brewing for the Buffalo Bills to stop the Chiefs from a three-peat. Maybe things will finally be different for Allen and the Bills this season, and just like Janis, they'll be able to stop the NFL Plastics once and for all.
Damian & Stefon Diggs
Stefon Diggs is the Damian to Josh Allen's Janis Ian. You can't imagine seeing Josh Allen win his first Super Bowl without Stefon Diggs in sight. Diggs perfectly complements Allen on the field; their chemistry is absolutely insane. But just in case Kendrick Lamar needs someone to cover for him for the Super Bowl Halftime show, maybe Diggs will be willing to step in and sing a cover of "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera.
Aaron Samuels & Joe Burrow
Need we say more? Before Travis Kelce captured the hearts of NFL fans with his high-profile relationship with Taylor Swift, there was Joe Burrow. He missed most of the 2023 season due to a wrist injury during a game against the Baltimore Ravens. We are so glad he is back this season, healthy and all. And can we all agree that Joe's hair looks sexy pushed back?
