Want To Win a Magical Getaway?!
NBA: Steph Curry and LeBron James went head to head in LA on Saturday night bringing out big names such as Kim Kardashian, Bad Bunny, Ben Affleck, J.Lo, and Novak Djokovic. Coming off three missed games due to an ankle sprain, Curry dropped 31 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists while LeBron James put up an impressive 40 pts. Ultimately, the Lakers were unable to defend their home court falling to the Warriors 128-121.
Tennis: After winning every. single. set. throughout the tournament, World No.1 Iga Swiatek took down Maria Sakkari in a dominant fashion to claim her second Indian Wells championship. Having won the Qatar Open in February, this is Iga’s second WTA 1000 title of the year and something tells us it won’t be her last. On the men’s side, Carlos Alcaraz was the one to raise the trophy after battling against Daniil Medvedev. Considering the Spanish star came into the tournament recovering a sprained ankle from late February, we’d say Alcaraz’s defending of his Indian Wells title is extra impressive.
NWSL: ICYMI, everybody is watching women’s sports and the NWSL is no exception. The season began this past weekend with multiple sold-out games, including one inside CPKC stadium, the first stadium in the world dedicated to a women’s sports team, the Kansas City Current. The Current beat the Portland Thorns, 5-4, with co-owners Brittany and Patrick Mahomes in the stands. The league has added two new teams this season, Bay FC, who beat Angel City 1-0, and the Utah Royals who fell 0-2 to the Chicago Red Stars.
How to Play? They don’t call it March MADNESS for nothing. On Selection Sunday (yesterday) teams are given a seed, 1-16, and are matched up accordingly. For example, the #1 team plays the #16 team, the #2 team plays #15, etc. This allows teams to participate fairly, as all aim for the National Championship game which will take place in Phoenix, Arizona this year.
PS. You can win big by making a bracket, more details on that later.
How Many Play? Teams competing either won their DI conference tournament or received an ‘at-large bid’ where they didn’t win a title but were good enough to be included. 68 college basketball teams, each ranked by a committee based on season performance, face off in seven rounds. Four teams are eliminated in the first round, leaving 64 teams to be divided into four regions (North, South, East, West) of 16 teams each.
Who to Watch? This year, our eyes are on No.2 Arizona’s Caleb Love and, duh, Caitlin Clark. After transferring from UNC, Love’s success led him to Pac-12 Player of the Year. Plus, a potential matchup between the Wildcats and UNC means drama and we’re here for it. Caitlin truly needs no introduction and seeing as she was *this* close to winning the title last year, we’re hopeful this senior could hold the trophy come the tournament’s end.
Random ISH About March Madness: Like many sports, March Madness has its own special lingo. Throughout the tourney, you’ll hear phrases like ‘sweet sixteen,’ ‘elite eight,’ or ‘final four.’ This signifies the number of teams left in the tournament. You might also hear the phrase ‘Cinderella story,’ but don’t get too excited, there are no glass slippers here. Instead, this refers to a low-ranked team that does much better than anyone would’ve thought.
