Whether you’re a seasoned sports fan or a first-time Olympic viewer, there is something for everyone. Here’s a Sportsish Olympic Guide for the girlies.
1. Find Your Sport
You'll want to start your viewing experience by finding events to watch. The Paris Olympics has 32 different sports. There are team sports, individual sports, and alternative sports. Examples of each category are below. Each of these sports is a part of the Olympics and promises plenty of exciting action throughout the Games.
Team Sports:
Basketball
Soccer
Rugby
Volleyball
Individual Sports:
Track and field
Gymnastics
Swimming
Tennis
Alternative Sports:
Breaking
Rock climbing
Skateboarding
Martial arts & weight lifting
Surfing
2. Who to Cheer For
A crucial part of your Olympic experience will be finding teams and athletes to cheer for as they compete. Here are some of the athletes Sportsish looks forward to watching.
The USA Women’s Basketball Team
3-point queen Sabrina Ionescu and the rest of the USA Women’s basketball team are looking to make history as they chase their 8th-straight Olympic Gold medal. With a remarkable stretch of 55 straight wins in Olympic competition, these gals will be exciting to cheer on.
USA Women’s Gymnastics Team
From Simone Biles' highly anticipated return to having the youngest competing athlete from Team USA, the women’s gymnastics team will be a sight to see. Simone and Suni Lee are both headed to the All-Around competition on August 1st. While the team competition wraps up on July 30th.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone
The current world recorder holder, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, is looking to chase gold at the Olympics and potentially break the world record she set for the sixth time. The 400m hurdler is changing the International track and hurdle game forever. We can’t wait to see what she accomplishes in Paris.
Sunny Choi & Breaking Debut
With the debut of break dancing (known as breaking) taking place in Paris, Sunny Choi is someone to keep your eyes on. With a unique path into the sport and the Olympics, Sunny’s ability to perform and compete will be worth the watch. I imagine it will be something like Step Up but Olympic style.
3. Consider Your Interests
One of the most important parts of your Olympic experience is finding something that will be interesting to you. If you love beautiful abs, swimming will be a great sport for you. Maybe you’re drawn to the incredible flips and twists of gymnastics. If you love the speed and performance of track and field athletes like Noah Lyles or Sha’Carri Richardson, then the track sprinting events will be exceptional.
Or if you love a good love story, Tara Davis-Woodhall (Olympic long jumper) and Hunter Woodhall (Paralympic Sprinter) will be sure to deliver tender moments. Maybe you love the hilarious social media icon Ilona Maher and want to see her athletic abilities, then women’s rugby will be your pick. If Snoop Dogg is your favorite rapper, then there will be plenty of him on NBC’s broadcasts. There truly is something that will interest everyone in these Paris Games.
Don’t be afraid to try new things or explore new sports! Maybe you’ll find a passion for kayak-cross or become surfing’s newest fan.
