Your Sign to Follow the WNBA

In recent years, women’s sports have slowly but surely started to get the recognition they deserve. Thanks to an increase in media coverage and the help of digital platforms like social media, these amazing athletes have been able to reach new audiences.

During this current season, the WNBA has had unprecedented growth in popularity, and rightfully so. While the newfound attention has contributed to achieving this, we must give credit where credit is due. This season has had an amazing roster that mixes talented rookies who constantly break records with legendary superstars, making every game a thrilling watch.

With the playoffs coming soon, this is the perfect moment to start watching if you haven’t already. If you still need more convincing, here are some of the reasons why we are obsessed with the WNBA and think you should be too.

No One is Doing It Like the WNBA Players

The WNBA has the best players in the world right now, as proven by the gold medal Team USA secured at the Paris Olympics. A perfect mix of young talent and experienced legends makes up a dream league roster.

Caitlin Clark, the No. 1 draft pick this year and college basketball record holder (both men’s and women’s) for career points and single-season points, has been a dominating force at the Indiana Fever this season. She is now in the top 10 for points per game while also creating 64.4% of her own baskets, which basically means she is a magician who does her own tricks.

Alongside Caitlin, fellow rookie Angel Reese has also been carving her own historic path with the Chicago Sky. Her rebound rate is already record-breaking; at 12.3, it’s the highest single-season mark ever. Further showcasing her amazing rebound skills, she just accomplished an astonishing 20+ rebounds per game in her last three appearances, making her the first player in WNBA history to achieve this.

On the other hand, you have experienced players who have succeeded tremendously in the league and continue to inspire future generations of girls. Such is the case of the iconic Diana Taurasi. The six-time gold medalist and three-time WNBA champion also holds the all-time scoring record in the league and continues to excel at the Phoenix Mercury, the team that drafted her in 2004.

A’Ja Wilson, a two-time gold medalist and two-time WNBA MVP, has also been a stellar presence in the league, helping the Las Vegas Aces win their first-ever championship in 2022 as a dominant player on the court.

This list could go on and on, highlighting all of the players, but it would become redundant to keep talking about every amazing athlete in the league when the point has been proven.

The Fashion Game Goes Hard

These girls aren’t just playmakers, they’re quickly becoming fashion icons as well. The tunnel walk before every game has served as the perfect opportunity for them to show off their amazing style, resulting in them arriving decked out in show-stopping looks.

Now, brands like Balmain, Versace, and Prada are all eager to dress the players, who in turn have reached out to stylists to help them elevate their looks and bring their style to the hallways every single time.

What’s made it more fun at the WNBA, compared to the NBA, is that male athletes tend to dress in more streetwear or on the casual side of luxury wear. While these female athletes don’t have any fears when it comes to taking fashion risks, resulting in the most incredible displays of personal style.

Therefore, catching a WNBA game means witnessing a display of amazing athletic skills while also getting the best fashion inspo, no matter what your preferred style is.

Some of our favorite outfits this season have been:

  • Kelsey Plum in her all-leather revenge ensemble after announcing her divorce from the Giants tight end Darren Wallen

  • A’Ja Wilson’s bejeweled pants that made the whole place shimmer, paired with a pink handbag

  • This twinning and winning moment between Nika Muhl and Angel Reese, who unknowingly wore it one week after the Seattle Storm rookie

  • Cameron Brink giving us Regina George-esque business realness

A-list Attendees

The boost in attention has also meant a rise in stadium attendance, with the WNBA games seeing an increase of 156 percent from last season. This includes celebrity appearances, with some regulars and some new faces.

Jason Sudeikis is an avid supporter of the league. He is constantly spotted in the stands at the New York Liberty games or sitting next to Chicago native Chance the Rapper watching Angel Reese and the Sky face off against Caitlin and the Indiana Fever.

Also eager to witness Clark’s talents on display was Iowa’s own Ashton Kutcher, who attended the Fever’s game against the LA Sparks with wife Mila Kunis and their kids. About the actor’s support, Caitlin mentioned, "He was encouraging me the whole game, so it was fun to have him courtside."

After Cameron Brink became the face of a Skims campaign, Kim Kardashian was also seen supporting her local team, bringing her oldest daughter North, and met with the team after the game.

These celebrity sightings help the visibility of the game. The fact that they are bringing their younger daughters allows the experience to become an incredible source of inspiration for them to grow up knowing women's sports matter and that their support will always be appreciated by these players.

The list of reasons we have to support the WNBA can go on for pages, but we figured this was a good starting point. It has been an incredible season filled with historic records being constantly broken, an amazing display of talents, and a creative freedom off the court never seen before. If the regular season has looked like this, we cannot wait to see what the playoffs will bring next month.
