Sports for Women, Played by Women, Covered by Women
Women's sports have been on a meteoric rise over the past years, generating the much-deserved buzz around it. With a growing fan base of loyal supporters who want to keep seeing these women shine, EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg is ready to give them what they're yearning for. The legendary entertainer announced her plans to launch the first global women's sports channel, AWSN, short for All Women's Sports Network.
She announced the exciting news during a visit to the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, explaining her future plans to the host. "It will be the home for live women's sports from around the world," she said. "Everything from soccer, basketball, tennis, cricket…if a woman is playing it, we are showing it."
She elaborated that her aim is to empower women and inspire young athletes by showcasing how "athletics, when they're done brilliantly, it doesn't matter who's doing it." It's a step in the right direction to keep uplifting women and a trailblazing moment for both the athletes and sports media.
A Very Philly Christmas for Stevie
Rock legend Stevie Nicks has just added an unexpected duet partner to her impressive list of collaborations. The Fleetwood Mac icon joined forces with Jason Kelce, former Philadelphia Eagles center, for the third edition of "A Philly Special Christmas Party," a holiday album recorded to raise funds for Philadelphia's Children's Crisis Treatment Center.
The project is performed by The Philly Specials, a vocal trio consisting of Philadelphia Eagles players Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, and Jordan Mailata. As their producer, The War On Drugs drummer Charlie Hall, describes it, "they just wanted to make something that's a love letter to Philly."
Last year, the main collaboration in the album featured Boyz II Men and Jason's brother Travis, showing off that the undercover singing talent is prominent in the Kelce household. However, this year, the duet went to new heights by recruiting the Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer singer to join the noble cause. The collaboration was a cover of "Maybe This Christmas" and is already available for streaming on music platforms, with the full album debuting on November 22nd. Once again, all sales proceeds will go to support charities in the Philadelphia area.
Touchdown Cellie from Down Under
This NFL season might set the record for the most incredible touchdown celebrations ever, with Minnesota Vikings Camryn Bynum officially becoming CEO of the Iconic Cellies Department. After giving us an iconic London celebration à la Parent Trap, this weekend, he decided to throw it back to Paris 2024, doing the now-famous Raygun breakdancing moves. During the Vikings' win against the Jaguars, the safety celebrated by perfectly recreating the Australian Olympian's routine, step by step, kangarooo bounce included.
Meanwhile, Raygun recently admitted that she's retiring from competing after scoring 0 points during the Games, thus unleashing an immense amount of backlash and unwanted criticism for her unconventional dance moves. As short-lived as her breakdancing career was, it will definitely live on forever as an iconic sports moment.
Sports' Hype Men
Arrowhead has recently become Taylor's new hangout spot, as she frequents her boyfriend Travis' games as much as she can to show her support. However, she isn't the only celebrity who loves to watch the undefeated team dominate the field! This weekend, the Chiefs' audience also included Flavor Flav and Jason Sudeikis, both famous for being avid sports fans. The rapper has been an outspoken advocate for different disciplines, including an outpour of moral and financial support for the USA Water Polo athletes during Paris 2024. Jason, on his part, is a frequent sideline staple at NBA and WNBA games, including several appearances throughout the league finals last month to support the New York Liberty.
The two stars shared a wholesome moment in the suite, with Flavor trying to reassure Jason, a longtime Kansas City fan, that the team still had time to return from trailing the Denver Broncos. It might've been the summoning of Flavor's hype man powers mixed with a sprinkle of Tayvoodo because the Chiefs managed to block a last-minute field goal attempt that would've given Denver the win, thus maintaining their season with a winning record of 9-0.
She'll Always be That Girl to us
Jordan Chiles opened up about her bronze medal scandal for the first time since the situation unfolded at the Summer Olympics. After making history by winning a bronze medal in the first-ever all-Black podium in Gymnastics, which was later taken back and awarded to Ana Barbosu because of a claim by Team Romania, she talked to the Today Show about her feelings regarding the upsetting situation.
With the support of her loved ones and the advice from her late grandfather in mind–' Everything happens for a reason. There's reasons on why you're the person you are. There's reasons on why people look up to you'–Jordan has started to move on from the heartbreak that came with getting her hard work recognized, only for it to be taken back later. Now, she's finally comfortable enough to talk about it and speak her truth openly, sharing: "I know that we were right in everything that we were doing."
Regardless of the medals awarded or the conclusions of the bureaucratic processes that have derived from this situation, Jordan is still confident in who she is, aware that there is a lesson in all of this. "I'll be able to overcome this, and I'll be able to look back and say, you know what, 'That was just a portion of my story, but it's the truth.'" In other words, she'll always be That Girl.
