Snoop Dogg: A National Treasure
Snoop Dogg. Grammy-nominated rapper. National Treasure. Team USA’s greatest mascot. Between his comments, cheering, and unique personality (Tony Lisa, the twin brother of Mona Lisa, for example), it is clear that Snoop’s heart and soul bleeds red, white, and blue at the 2024 Olympics.
Even before the games began, Snoop showed support. He attended the track and field trials in Eugene, Oregon, pledging his unwavering support for Team USA. Once arriving in Paris, Snoop received one of the Olympic’s highest honors: torch bearer. Snoop carried the torch through the suburb of Saint-Denis, France, ahead of the games. He did so in natural Snoop fashion, dancing along the route and dropping it like it was hot. During the Opening Ceremony, Snoop assisted NBC in providing commentary on the action. Dressed patriotically, he interviewed the Biles Family with Hoda Kotb.
Once the games started, Snoop set out on a mission to be at as many USA events as possible. He cheered on Simone, Jordan, Suni, Jade, and Hezly, the iconic women’s gymnastics team, as they competed in the qualifiers. Snoop was spotted in the stands next to Simone’s family, wearing a shirt with Simone’s face. He even danced along with Jordan and Simone during a break in competition.
Snoop has also dove headfirst into supporting Team USA swimmers. He stood next to Meghan Dressel, who held her newborn, August, as they watched Meghan’s husband, Caleb, win gold. Snoop and Meghan pumped their fists to celebrate Caleb’s huge victory. Snoop also got his turn in the pool, when Michael Phelps, the GOAT, gave him a lesson. Snoop and Michael’s time together consisted of some pointers and a freestyle race. Snoop has also appeared at the USA Women’s Beach Volleyball match, met the ladies of USA Fencing, and showed his strength to the USA Weight Lifting team.
Besides being torch bearer, Opening Ceremony co-host, and mascot, Snoop has taken his job as commentator extremely seriously. His latest commentary included the United States v. China in badminton. The comments made the match loads of fun, and many viewers tuned into a sport they would not normally watch.
In one rally, Snoop said, “As you see, it don’t stop ’til the casket drop. They rocking and rolling. Back and forth. Give me that. No, I need that. Nope, over here. No, over there. What about over there? Nope.”
Now, this is not Snoop’s first rodeo with commentating. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Snoop commentated the dressage event, alongside Kevin Hart. The two were an iconic pairing, leading them both to return to Paris - Kevin is co-hosting a highlight show with Kennan Thompson, available on Peacock.
In preparation for Paris, Snoop commentated at the USA Track and Field Olympic Trials. He gave his unique insights into the Steeplechase event: “What we're about to see right now is they're about to get to dipping, gripping, riding, slipping, and hopefully not sliding. Oh, he jumped on the top of the hurdle. You can do that? That was a cool trick right there. I liked that one. He went off the tippy top.” It is safe to say that anything Snoop does turns to gold.
The 2024 Olympics is Snoop Dogg’s ultimate side quest in life. He is having the time of his life, bringing smiles to the athletes, and continuing to remind us why he is the best. A highlight of Snoop’s greatest moments so far can be found here. We’re crossing our fingers that this is just the beginning of Snoop’s commentating and cheering career. Let’s all manifest a Super Bowl show next!
