Australian Breakdancer Ray-Gun “Breaks” Her Silence

Rachel Gunn, aka Ray-Gun, went viral over social media last week when she competed in the new Olympic sport, breaking. The Australian breakdancer was the subject of negative comments, memes, and jokes across the internet.

Although most of the conversation about her was playful, it also sparked some adverse reactions. In a video posted on her Instagram, she responded to all the backlash she has received.

Her loss in the three round-robin battles came after she failed to earn a single point. A petition was then made questioning her selection for the Games. The petition has gathered over 50,000 signatures. The Australian Olympic Committee has since criticized it, so it has been removed. The committee described it as “disgraceful” and a form of bullying.

“I really appreciate the positivity and I’m glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives…I didn’t realize that would also open the door to so much hate which has, frankly, been pretty devastating.... While I went out there and I had fun, I did take it very seriously. I worked my butt off preparing for the Olympics. I gave my all— truly.”

Breaking debuted in Paris, but it has already been confirmed that it will not be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. So, Gunn will not be making another Olympic appearance and will return to her role as a university lecturer in Sydney.
