Their mother was a nurse practitioner, and when she worked night shifts, the boys would stay with their father and sleep in his office. It's worth noting that while some of the other successful American tennis players in the tournament, such as Emma Navarro and Taylor Fritz, come from affluent backgrounds, Tiafoe's upbringing presents a stark contrast.

He has openly talked about how he used to complain to his dad about having to wear hand-me-down clothes at school, and it was only after a trip to Sierra Leone when he was eight years old that he realized the privilege he had. He was exposed to extreme poverty for the first time, and it put his life in the United States into perspective for him. The culture shock was real, but he noticed the happiness on everyone's faces despite their adverse living conditions. There was a genuine sense of community and support amongst the people which he was drawn to.
“We realized that we ain’t rich or living the high life, but we are definitely still blessed. We got food on the table every night, parents who love us, a TV, and all the accessories we need.”
Tiafoe started working with a high-performance tennis coach, leading to numerous tournament victories. He became a professional at age 17, making his grand slam debut at the 2015 French Open.
Now, Tiafoe gets to live his dream every day, all because of the sacrifices made in his youth.
